Toyota’s biggest SUV doesn’t have its biggest cargo hold. Toyota’s 2026 specifications, checked September 30, put the Grand Highlander’s maximum cargo capacity at 97.5 cubic feet, ahead of the Sequoia’s 86.9. When you’re comparing Toyota SUV sizes for family use, start with usable space before choosing the largest body.

Quick answer

The Corolla Cross is Toyota’s smallest U.S. SUV for 2026, while the Sequoia is the largest. The RAV4 offers two-row seating; the Highlander and Grand Highlander add a third row. For maximum cargo capacity, the Grand Highlander beats the Sequoia, according to Toyota’s 2026 specifications.

This is a specification-based review of U.S. 2026 models, rather than a road test. Earlier-model luggage testing is identified separately; don’t apply these measurements to a different model year or another country’s lineup.

Toyota SUV sizes, smallest to largest

Exterior length tells you how much parking space a vehicle occupies. It doesn’t establish how many people can sit comfortably inside, so read the seating column separately.

These reference configurations use Toyota documentation and the identified vehicle specifications, checked September 30, 2026. Seating figures are maximum available capacities, not a promise that every trim has that arrangement. The Land Cruiser’s position remains provisional because its published measurements conflict.

The RAV4’s longer GR SPORT body explains its length variation. Toyota’s 2026 RAV4 Sales Consultant Guide lists that version at 182.9 inches, versus 181.0 for the standard body.

Land Cruiser needs a factory-data check: Bondy’s Toyota lists a specific 2026 vehicle at 193.8 inches, but Toyota’s current comparison page says 196.4.

RAV4 vs Highlander dimensions: What does the extra length buy?

Toyota’s 2026 RAV4 guide and Highlander comparison page, checked September 30, show that the Highlander XLE is 13.9 inches longer than the standard-body RAV4. Yet its second-row legroom advantage is just 0.9 inch. Those differences are calculated from the published measurements below.

MeasurementRAV4, standard bodyHighlander XLE
Length181.0 inches194.9 inches
Published width73.0 inches76.0 inches
Second-row legroom37.8 inches38.7 inches
Maximum seating58

That changes the buying argument. The Highlander’s extra length accommodates another seating row and a larger maximum load area, rather than a dramatic increase in room for the person directly behind you.

Start with the RAV4 when you need a compact footprint and won’t use a third row. Sit behind your own driving position before deciding it’s too small; moving the driver’s seat forward for a showroom demonstration defeats the comparison.

Choose the Highlander when the additional seats solve an actual transport problem. Toyota’s September 5, 2025 announcement specifies captain’s chairs for seven passengers, with an available second-row bench on eligible versions for eight. Check the vehicle’s equipment sheet rather than assuming every Highlander carries the same number.

Toyota SUV cargo space comparison: Keep the seats straight

A cargo figure becomes useful only when you know which seats are folded. A RAV4 with its rear seats upright and a Highlander with every seating row upright leave different numbers of passenger places available.

These selected figures come from Toyota’s 2026 documentation and Tustin Toyota’s Sequoia configuration table, checked September 30, 2026. The C-HR figures appear in Toyota’s February 18, 2026 announcement; the RAV4 figures come from its 2026 sales guide.

ModelBehind the last upright rowMaximum with rear rows folded
C-HR25.3 cubic feet59.5 cubic feet.
RAV4 hybrid37.8 cubic feet70.4 cubic feet.
Highlander16.0 cubic feet84.3 cubic feet.
Grand Highlander20.6 cubic feet97.5 cubic feet.
Sequoia11.5–22.3 cubic feet86.9 cubic feet.

The Sequoia’s variable figure needs particular attention. Tustin Toyota’s 2026 specification table lists 11.5 cubic feet with the third row back and 22.3 with it forward. Sliding that row increases luggage room at the expense of the space in front of its passengers.

Set the seat for the person who’ll use it, then load your bags. Don’t let a demonstration with the third row pushed forward decide whether the vehicle fits your family.

Why the Grand Highlander is the family-space pick

For a family whose priority is luggage capacity, the Grand Highlander gets the nod here. Using Toyota’s figures checked September 30, it offers 10.6 cubic feet more maximum cargo capacity than the Sequoia while occupying 6.7 fewer inches of driveway length. Those differences are calculated from the published specifications.

Toyota’s July 31, 2025 Grand Highlander announcement also specifies 33.5 inches of third-row legroom. That’s a reason to put it on your shortlist, although your passengers should still check foot space and thigh support themselves.

A luggage test explains what cubic feet miss

In an Autoblog test published October 9, 2023, James Riswick placed his two largest suitcases end to end across the Grand Highlander’s cargo floor. Each measured 26 inches long. He then fitted his complete six-bag test set behind the raised third row and closed the liftgate.

That test is older than 18 months and covers an earlier model year, not a 2026 test vehicle. Its useful lesson is the packing arrangement: floor width allowed long cases to sit across the vehicle, without relying on a deep underfloor compartment.

Bring your actual folded stroller to the dealership. A cubic-foot rating can’t tell you whether its wheels clear the opening or whether its handle stops the tailgate from shutting.

Where do the electric SUVs and Crown Signia fit?

The C-HR in this chart is the U.S. battery-electric model described in Toyota’s February 18, 2026 C-HR announcement. Its familiar name doesn’t make an older gasoline C-HR specification sheet applicable to it.

The bZ Woodland occupies more space than the bZ. Toyota’s February 17, 2026 release describes the added body length and quotes up to 74.3 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. It’s worth inspecting when you want an electric SUV and regularly carry bulky loads.

The Crown Signia answers a different question. Toyota’s comparison page, checked September 30, lists a 194.1-inch body but only five seats. Its November 4, 2025 announcement describes a fold-flat load area 6.5 feet long, so exterior length here serves a two-row layout rather than an additional passenger row.

Don’t choose between these vehicles from their position in the length table alone. Try the driving position with the seat adjusted properly, then check rear-seat access with the front seat left there.

Does the 4Runner replace a three-row family SUV?

Toyota’s 2026 4Runner page, checked September 30, lists an available third row on the gasoline SR5 and Limited. The Land Cruiser comparison page lists five seats. That distinction matters more than which badge looks larger on the dealership forecourt.

For regular third-row use, ask the salesperson to demonstrate access with your child-seat arrangement in place. A seat you can reach only after removing equipment isn’t convenient for the school run, even when the seating-capacity figure looks right.

Toyota SUV size FAQ

What is the smallest Toyota SUV?

The Corolla Cross is the smallest SUV in Toyota’s U.S. 2026 lineup. Toyota’s comparison page, checked September 30, 2026, lists it at 176.1 inches long with five seats. Use that U.S. specification when shopping, and check the particular vehicle rather than borrowing measurements from an older model.

Which Toyota SUV has the most cargo space?

For maximum space with rear seats folded, the 2026 Grand Highlander leads this comparison at 97.5 cubic feet. Toyota’s specifications checked September 30, 2026, put the Sequoia at 86.9. With passengers aboard, compare the space behind the last occupied row rather than those maximum figures.

Is the Highlander bigger than the RAV4?

Yes. Toyota’s 2026 specifications, checked September 30, list the Highlander XLE at 194.9 inches long and the standard-body RAV4 at 181.0. The Highlander also offers a third row. Its second-row legroom advantage is much smaller than the exterior length difference suggests, so test your seating position.

Which Toyota SUVs have third-row seating?

The 2026 Highlander, Grand Highlander and Sequoia have third rows, and selected 4Runner versions offer one. Toyota’s U.S. model information checked September 30, 2026, confirms those arrangements. Check the exact trim and second-row seat type before buying, because the nameplate alone doesn’t tell you its passenger capacity.

Measure the space beyond the bumpers

Roof clearance deserves a separate check. Toyota’s 2026 RAV4 guide lists the Woodland at 69.1 inches high with its roof rails and crossbar. Measure the lowest point of your garage entrance before adding a roof box; the vehicle’s listed height won’t account for that extra equipment.

At the dealership, leave the front seats where you’d actually use them, open the rear doors as far as your parking space permits, and work through the loading routine until you know whether the vehicle fits the way you live. Then check the garage.

Here’s a worked example: an unobstructed 20-foot bay is 240 inches long. Subtract the Sequoia’s 208.1-inch length from Toyota’s comparison page, checked September 30, and just 31.9 inches remain for both ends combined.

Compare Toyota SUV sizes against the usable bay after accounting for your workbench and the closed garage door. In that example, every inch you leave behind the rear bumper comes out of the room available at the front.
